Il film I peccatori (Sinners, 2025) ha conquistato quasi unanimemente critica e pubblico lo scorso anno, con la storia di due gemelli afroamericani nel Mississippi degli anni ’30 che si trovano ad affrontare una minaccia dai contorni soprannaturali. Tuttavia, dopo le sue sedici nomination da record alla 98ª edizione degli Academy Awards, molti osservatori si chiedono quale sia la fonte dell’immenso successo del film.
1. Il regista
Ryan Coogler era già considerato un talento promettente e ormai consolidato dopo il successo del piccolo biopic Prossima fermata Fruitvale Station (2013). Nel corso degli ultimi decenni è cresciuto non solo anagraficamente, ma anche come interprete, entrando in enormi franchise come i film Marvel ed ereditando la saga di Rocky, dove interpreta il protagonista Adonis Johnson (Creed) in Creed (2015). Il suo ruolo nei Peccatori richiede che sia al massimo delle proprie capacità, poiché deve interpretare due personaggi nel corso del film. L’attore deve distinguerli chiaramente l’uno dall’altro, far affezionare il pubblico a entrambi e, al tempo stesso, gestire il rapporto reciproco tra i due personaggi. Scelte come l’utilizzo di cineprese IMAX per gran parte del film hanno influenzato significativamente l’aspetto e l’atmosfera dell’opera. Questo ha permesso di catturare dettagli e texture con grande precisione, aiutando gli spettatori a immergersi completamente nel film. Coogler si è davvero concentrato sul ruolo che queste cineprese potevano avere, al punto da confrontarsi con registi esperti come Christopher Nolan per capire come utilizzarle al meglio. È arrivato persino a pubblicare un video in cui spiegava le proprie scelte tecniche agli appassionati di cinema. Oltre a ciò, materiali, costumi e colori hanno contribuito a collegare il pubblico all’ambientazione degli anni Trenta. 5. L’uso dei generi cinematografici
Gli spettatori sono usciti dalle sale discutendo se il film fosse più un musical che un horror. Altri si sono chiesti se la prima metà fosse un dramma storico o addirittura un gangster movie. Questa combinazione di generi ha quasi rischiato di ritorcersi contro il film, perché il pubblico è stato così coinvolto dalle prime parti che l’horror strisciante è sembrato quasi un’intrusione quando finalmente è arrivato. Eppure, esiste forse momento migliore per mettere i personaggi in pericolo mortale, se non dopo aver fatto sì che un’intera sala cinematografica si sia affezionata alle loro vite?
6. La costruzione del mondo narrativo
Nel film c’era davvero qualcosa per tutti. Inoltre, l’opera ha trovato nuove prospettive e aspetti poco esplorati della mitologia e della storia da approfondire. Questo ha contribuito molto a distinguerlo dagli altri film horror. Diversi gruppi di spettatori hanno dichiarato di essersi sentiti rappresentati, riconoscendo sullo schermo parti della propria storia e cultura. Il Mississippi degli anni Trenta è l’ambientazione ideale per mettere in luce la cultura afroamericana in un periodo molto specifico e difficile della storia americana. Il Mississippi, in particolare, permette di esplorare il profondo folklore del Sud degli Stati Uniti. I personaggi discutono della natura della crisi, scambiando inizialmente i vampiri per haints, spiriti della tradizione folkloristica del Sud. Anche la musica rappresenta un ulteriore spazio creativo: il film passa rapidamente da gighe irlandesi a danze asiatiche, rock, funk e jazz.
7. Il supporto dello studio cinematografico

Why was “Sinners” so successful? Reflections on an Oscar-Worthy Film

The movie Sinners (2025) almost universally won over critics and audiences alike last year, following the story of two African American twin brothers in 1930s Mississippi who find themselves confronting a supernatural threat. Although after a record-breaking sixteen nominations at the 98th Academy Awards many observers are asking, what is the source of the film’s immense success?
1. The Director
Ryan Coogler was already considered a strong freshly established talent after succeeding with the small biopic Fruitvale Station (2013). Coogler moved on to several large productions like Black Panther (2018), excelling at crowd pleasing entertainment. However, Sinners, his latest triumph, was acknowledged for its direct connection with the filmmaker. The film has a personal quality that elevates it. The director’s influences are very prominently visible on screen. His use of various cameras, his reflection on music history, his family relationship with Mississippi and Irish culture are all present in every frame. The films that inspired the director act as an excellent backdrop for the deep themes he tries to tackle over the film. All of this leaves Sinners feeling special, a film with a unique identity that you’re not likely to see very often and demands your time.
2. The Main Actor
Michael B. Jordan, an actor you could have seen on your screens since the early 2000s, is the main star of this production. He’s been working in acclaimed series such as The Wire from his teen years. The star has not only grown in age but as a performer over the last few decades, entering huge franchises like the Marvel movies and inheriting the Rocky films where he would become the titular character Adonis Johnson (Creed) in Creed (2015). His role in Sinners requires him to be at the peak of his abilities to portray two characters throughout the film. The actor has to distinguish the two from one another and endear the audience to both while managing the two characters relationship with each other. This would be a daunting task for even the most accomplished actor, especially as the project rests on the audience’s acceptance and care for the two characters. Jordan achieves this well and was rightfully rewarded for this performance, including an Academy Award for Best Actor.
3. The Ensemble and Partnership of the Artists
The most recent Academy Awards went a long way to emphasizing the importance of a cast and casting itself when it introduced the new awards for casting. Sinners excelled at this, with a solid mix of new discoveries like Miles Caton and industry veterans like Delroy Lindo. This assortment of talent was celebrated during award season when the film received Oscar nominations for three of the major acting awards and also a nomination for the new category, Best Casting. Coogler himself is no stranger to developing a strong group of collaborators for his projects. Sinners is the fifth collaboration between Coogler, composer Ludwig Göransson and actor Michael B. Jordan. The result was an each of them winning an Academy Award for the film.
4. The Style and Costumes
Choices like using IMAX cameras for much of the movie significantly impacted the look and feel of the film. This captured the intricate details and textures and helped draw filmgoers into the movie. Coogler was incredibly focused on the role these cameras could have, to the point he quizzed other expert directors like Christopher Nolan on how best to implement them. He even went as far as to release a video explaining his decisions on camera selection for cinephiles to enjoy. Beyond that the materials, costumes and colours assisted in connecting the audience with the 1930s setting. The same tools are heavily used to indicate the changes in the narrative, provide symbolism over the course of the story and to separate the characters looks and feels. You can see materials are used to illustrate the difference in class, while costumes tell the story of characters’ histories and colour is frequently used to visually set the two characters Jordan plays apart from one another.
5. The Use of Genre
Fans left the theatre arguing whether the film was more of a musical than a horror movie. Others debated whether the first half was a period drama or even a gangster movie. The discussion dominated the online discourse and with good reason, each element was treated with as much care as any other. The musical segments felt inventive and fresh, the burning barn medley being one of the standout scenes of the year. The period drama captured the audience’s interest with an intriguing plot and great sense for the era. This assortment of genres, almost backfired as people where so invested in the early parts, the creeping horror nearly felt like an intrusion when it finally arrived. However is there a better time to put your characters into deadly peril than after you’ve got a cinema full of people to care about all these lives?
6. The World Building
There was a little something for everyone throughout the film. Although it also found new slants and overlooked parts of mythology and history to explore. This very much helped distinguish it from other horror movies. Various groups claimed to feel acknowledged and they were able to recognise part of their history and culture on the screen. 1930s Mississippi was ideal for highlighting black culture in a very specific and difficult time in American history. Mississippi in particular allowed them to explore the deep folklore of “The South”. Characters argue about the nature of the crisis, briefly mistaking vampires for haints. Music is another avenue for this creativity, switching between Irish jigs, Asian dance, rock, funk and jazz in quick succession.
7. The Studio Support
Such was the faith Warner Bros had in Coogler he was able to negotiate a deal where ownership of the film would revert back to him in 25 years. Warner Bros provided a significant budget for a horror movie, along with giving the director plenty of creative control throughout the production. This really helped the movie to be recognised as Coogler’s film. Coogler was happy to appear in videos and podcasts to ruminate over creative choices to build a palpable sense of excitement before the release. Coogler repaid this faith with a robust financial return and an outstanding award season. Hopefully this can be a blueprint for directors and studios to find success in the future.
