Con il successo di L’ultima missione: Project Hail Mary (2026), i talenti registici di Phil Lord e Christopher Miller sono ormai sotto i riflettori. Il loro ultimo progetto è stato definito uno dei migliori film di fantascienza del decennio. Per molti, però, non è affatto una sorpresa. I due non sono diventati soltanto affermati produttori durante la loro esperienza a Hollywood, ma anche eccellenti registi, avendo diretto Piovono polpette (2009), 21 Jump Street (2012) e The LEGO Movie (2014). È chiaro che si tratta di una collaborazione estremamente proficua.
Le collaborazioni sono sempre state una parte integrante dell’industria cinematografica, ma forse il mondo del cinema dovrebbe dedicare più attenzione ai successi dei registi che lavorano in coppia. L’industria, infatti, è sempre stata rapida nel celebrare i sodalizi tra registi e compositori. Provereste le stesse emozioni per un classico di Steven Spielberg senza John Williams? Da Lo squalo (1975) a Jurassic Park (1993) i due hanno fatto la storia del cinema. Dopo una collaborazione che ha portato a 29 film, questo duo è probabilmente il sodalizio più prolifico della storia del cinema. Si può parlare di coppie di successo anche per figure come Wes Anderson, che ha sviluppato uno stile e un’estetica ormai iconici nei suoi film, condividendo però costantemente i riflettori con Robert Yeoman. Ingmar Bergman e Sven Nykvist, Alfonso Cuarón e Emmanuel Lubezki, Christopher Nolan e Hans Zimmer, Alfred Hitchcock e Bernard Herrmann, Sergio Leone e Ennio Morricone, Tim Burton e Danny Elfman: esiste una lista pressoché infinita di celebri sodalizi tra registi e coloro che modellano l’estetica e il suono dei loro film.
Le collaborazioni tra registi e montatori sono meno conosciute, come quella tra Martin Scorsese e Thelma Schoonmaker, che lavorano insieme dalla metà degli anni Sessanta. Nonostante ciò, occupano ancora un posto ben visibile nell’immaginario dei cinefili. Scorsese è ampiamente considerato uno dei più grandi registi della storia e Schoonmaker è stata al suo fianco raccogliendo premi e riconoscimenti. Ha ricevuto nove candidature agli Academy Awards e ne ha vinti tre. Il fatto che tutte e tre le vittorie siano arrivate per film diretti da Scorsese dimostra l’importanza e il peso della loro collaborazione.
Il riconoscimento più vicino che di solito diamo a una coppia di registi è, in modo piuttosto curioso, quello tra regista e attore. Coppie come Ryan Coogler e Michael B. Jordan, Akira Kurosawa e Toshiro Mifune, oppure Alfred Hitchcock con sia Cary Grant che James Stewart, illustrano il profondo impatto che gli attori hanno avuto sui registi. Spesso vengono etichettati con termini come “musa” o “fonte d’ispirazione”, per sottolineare l’influenza che possono avere sui progetti cinematografici. Questo confine sempre più sfumato è arrivato al punto in cui Noah Baumbach ha lavorato così a stretto contatto con Greta Gerwig in film come Frances Ha (2012) e Mistress America (2015), che lei ha ottenuto il credito di sceneggiatrice in entrambi ed è considerata una co-regista dei film. Gerwig avrebbe poi iniziato a dirigere autonomamente i propri progetti a partire da Lady Bird (2017), ottenendo un notevole successo come attrice diventata regista.
Fin dai primi giorni del cinema, i duo registici sono sempre esistiti. La leggendaria collaborazione britannica tra Michael Powell e Emeric Pressburger ha prodotto opere ancora oggi molto apprezzate. Scarpette rosse (1948) e Scala al paradiso (1946) sono due esempi della loro perdurante rilevanza. Negli ultimi anni, coppie di fratelli hanno condiviso la sedia da regista con grande successo. I fratelli Russo sono entrati a far parte del Marvel Cinematic Universe dopo anni di lavoro in televisione. I due hanno diretto Avengers: Infinity War (2018) e Avengers: Endgame (2019), due dei film con i maggiori incassi di tutti i tempi. Le sorelle Wachowski, poi, hanno cambiato il panorama cinematografico con il loro debutto in Matrix (1999). La combinazione di azione e filosofia, insieme a numerose innovazioni tecniche, stupì il pubblico al momento dell’uscita, dando origine a un’ondata di film imitativi che cercavano di replicarne lo stile. Lo scorso anno, dopo anni di collaborazione, i fratelli Safdie hanno realizzato film sportivi che hanno finito per competere per molti degli stessi premi. Tuttavia, questi due talenti emergenti hanno iniziato la loro carriera come duo registico, ottenendo rapidamente notorietà, con Good Time (2017) e Diamanti grezzi (2019). Hanno lasciato la porta aperta a future collaborazioni.
Ad ogni modo, la coppia più iconica è senz’altro quella dei fratelli Coen: Fargo (1996), Il grande Lebowski (1998) e Non è un Paese per vecchi (2007), insieme ad altri titoli, si sono guadagnati lo status di nomi entrati nell’immaginario collettivo. Avendo padroneggiato numerosi stili e generi, i fratelli Coen si sono solidamente inseriti nella discussione sui più grandi registi viventi. Daniel Kwan e Daniel Scheinert (i Daniels) probabilmente guardano con una certa invidia al successo dei Coen. I Daniels hanno iniziato realizzando videoclip musicali per poi passare ai lungometraggi, ottenendo enorme successo di critica e un trionfo agli Oscar con Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022). Con una creatività apparentemente infinita e un arsenale di soluzioni cinematografiche senza limiti, il duo ha lasciato l’industria in trepidante attesa di nuovi progetti.
Tutti questi duo hanno aperto numerosi possibili percorsi per i talentuosi Lord e Miller, percorsi che speriamo decidano di percorrere ancora insieme, magari a braccetto.

The Quiet Success of Directing Duos
With the success of Project Hail Mary (2026), the directing talents of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are now front and centre. Their latest project has been labelled one of the best Sci-fi film of the decade. However, for many this isn’t a surprise. The duo have not just become accomplished producers during their time in Hollywood but also excellent directors having directed Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009), 21 Jump Street (2012) and The Lego Movie (2014). Clearly this is a fruitful partnership.
Partnerships have always been an integral part of the film industry, but perhaps the film community should spend more time highlighting the triumphs of directors working as pairs. The business has always been quick to highlight team ups of directors and composers. Would you still have the same feeling for a Steven Spielberg classic without John Williams? From Jaws (1975) to Jurassic Park (1993) the pair has created cinematic history. After a relationship that has led to 29 films, this twosome is likely the most prolific pairing in film history. The same can be said for the likes of Wes Anderson who has developed a now iconic style and look to his films but has continuously had Robert Yeoman to share the spotlight. Although they still have a very visible place in the minds of cinephiles. Scorsese is widely regarded as one of cinemas all-time great directors and Schoonmaker has been by his side collecting the awards and plaudits. Having been nominated for nine Academy Awards and having won three. The fact that all three wins were for films directed by Scorsese indicates the prominence of the collaboration.
The closest we usually come to celebrating a directing team is oddly the director and actor pairing. Couples such as Ryan Coogler and Michael B. The Russo Brothers joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe after years of working in TV. The brothers helmed Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), two of the highest grossing films of all time. Other siblings like the Wachowskis change the landscape of film after their debut with The Matrix (1999). The combination of action and philosophy along with many technical innovations astonished filmgoers at the time of its release prompting a wave of copycat films looking to emulate their style. Last year after years of working together the Safdie Brothers made sports movies that ended up competing for many of the same awards. However, these two exciting talents started their directing careers working together and quickly achieve notoriety with Good Time (2017) and Uncut Gems (2019). They have left the door open for further collaborations.
The most iconic pairing must be the Coen Brothers: Fargo (1996), The Big Lebowski (1998), and No Country for Old Men (2007) along with other films have made them household names. Having mastered numerous styles and genres the Coen brothers have firmly placed themselves in the discussion of greatest living directors. Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (The Daniels) are likely eyeing the success of the Coens jealously. The Daniels started out making music videos and graduated to feature films achieving enormous acclaim and Oscar success with Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022). With the seemingly endless creativity displayed and boundless bag of cinema tricks the pair must have the industry eagerly awaiting other projects by this team.
All these duos have paved many potential paths for the talented Lord and Miller to aim to walk down, hopefully hand in hand.
